How Many Movers Do You Need? A Crew Size Guide

Two movers or four? It is the first decision after picking a date, and it changes both your bill and how long moving day lasts. Here is how to size the crew right, based on how we actually staff moves in the DMV.

The short answer by home size

Two movers and a truck ($120 per hour) handle studios and 1-2 bedroom apartments comfortably. Three movers ($150 per hour) are the sweet spot for 2-3 bedroom homes and townhomes. Four movers ($190 per hour) fit large houses, homes with lots of stairs, and anyone on a tight schedule. Full rates and typical totals are on our pricing page.

Why a bigger crew often costs about the same

Here is the math people miss: the hourly rate goes up with crew size, but the hours go down. A 3-bedroom house that takes two movers 9 hours takes three movers around 6. At $120 x 9 versus $150 x 6, the totals land close together – but with the larger crew your moving day ends by mid-afternoon instead of dinner time. You are not really paying more; you are buying back your day.

When to size up

Add a mover beyond the baseline when any of these apply: three or more flights of stairs at either address, a long carry from the door to where the truck can park, heavy pieces like a piano, safe or exercise machine, or a hard deadline such as a building elevator window or a same-day lease handover. Each of these eats time, and extra hands are the cheapest way to win it back.

When two movers are plenty

A furnished studio or one-bedroom with elevator access, a partially packed home where you are moving many boxes yourself, or a short in-neighborhood hop – two movers handle all of these near the 3-hour minimum. Adding a third would just mean paying more to finish slightly earlier than you need to.
